It's been a long, trying year; I'm still "between jobs," as they say, but 2013 just has to be brighter on that front. On a positive note, I'm still not smoking (27 weeks & 4 days!), my health is improving, my family is close by, and I've been kept a little bit more sane by dear friends, knitting, and exercise.

Sadly, not one of my quilting goals was accomplished in 2012. I do hope my mojo for that comes back because I'm not ready to part with my stash. Although if this fiscal cliffhanger doesn't end, I may have to, to keep from living under a bridge next week. ;)

I have managed to complete 15 pair of socks, 4 hats, and 1 pair of mittens. I also knit and frogged two solo socks that were pattern tests for others but weren't working out for my size/gift purposes. Carrying forward into the new year I have only a hat and a child's sweater as WIPs, and a pair of socks if I don't finish them tonight!
I was able to finish the Darjeeling socks late last night. Definitely a pattern I'll make again. Grant's OSU socks haven't fared as well, but they are quick when I get back to them. I think these are actually pair 9 & 10 for my 12in2012, but in the end I'll probably only count the kid socks as 1 for every two pair.
These projects were finished in May, June, & July so far.

I have a pair of OSU-colored stripes to finish up today for Grant, and I only have a few inches of leg to go on these Darjeeling socks so I should finish them today too.

In other news, I lost my job in early June and spend countless hours in the quest for a new, better, less stressful one. I also joined the Y a couple of months ago and quit smoking finally, once and for all, last time, EVER. And of course, the weather continues to keep me on edge and/or paralyze me; bring on Fall & Winter!

I allowed myself to be talked into buying a bushel of tomatoes, and I made salsa for the first time yesterday. It was quite bland so I'm off to try again today with different peppers!

Take care!

Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05206971105008663908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7045803000351228084.post-17841298859264130922012-05-06T23:14:00.001-04:002012-05-06T23:14:54.603-04:00It's been a long couple of weeks here lately. I completely ripped back the Hermione socks and was sailing away on re-knitting them in a smaller size. Ripped back the grandkid socks to re-knit them in a larger size. Then I got a impulsive itch and decided I wanted to move to a new place locally with ground-level access. Went through a flurry of making lists, cleaning, phone calls, emails, paperwork, packing, tossing, donating... everything else got set aside. I've since decided I won't move just yet, so while I regret wasting all those days not knitting or quilting I'm glad I have a head start on the moving process.

Friday I got to be part of a wonderful test knit class for Michelle "KnitPurl" Hunter who lives and teaches locally. It was actually a process and timing exercise to see how long it took for her to teach certain things and for the class to accomplish each part and move on. We all learned so many new skills: Magic Loop, two-handed two color stranded knitting, swatching in the round, and afterthought thumbs, along with learning lots of new tips and tricks. She's a great teacher, and so very patient. The other part of the exercise is to see if all sorts of people (different skill levels and knitting styles, different size hands) can get the pair of mittens from 50g of each color yarn. Except for the thumb, I finished one tonight and I have 28g left of the gray, so it will be close.
Thanks to spraining my ankle going down the stairs, and then twisting my knee (while trying to protect my ankle when tripping over the dog's bone), I've had lots of propped-leg time to knit. Thankfully seasons 1 and 2 of Downton Abbey appeared just in time to keep me company.

I managed to finish the red Simple SKYP socks in March (love these!) and started on prototype socks for the grandkids, who have exceptionally long feet for their ages. But just like the three bears, the first ones were too big so I ripped them back and started over. The second pair are too small, but I may just bind them off and donate; I hate ripping back knitting.
While waiting to try the blue socks on the kids, I started the next pair for my 12 in 2012. This pattern is Hermione's Everyday Socks in an old Knitpicks Essential yarn. It's a lot thinner than the Stroll yarn I used for the SKYP socks. Even after going down a needle size after I finished the toes they are too loosely knit and too big, so I'll be ripping something back after all. Although it doesn't show well in this washed-out photo, I love the texture this pattern creates.

After slogging through the SKYP socks one at a time, I decided to invest in a kitchen scale so I could break down large skeins for two-at-a-time socks. I researched scales on Amazon and finally decided on this one by EatSmart. I wanted something that could weigh yarn or food with appropriate units of measure and that would allow me to zero out any container before putting in/on the food to weigh. I couldn't be happier with the purchase, and for food portion control it can't be beat. They have exceptional customer service too. No affiliation, just a very satisfied customer!

For the record, not a great pattern to rip back unless you have a lifeline. It's much easier to count and examine your stitches every half-round.

I'll be binding off in daylight today, and then heading to the sewing machine for the remainder of the weekend!
I'm so glad 2011 is done with and I made it to the other side. To quote a facebook friend, my plans in 2012 are to " Eat less, move more. Frown less, smile more. Do what I can, when I can." Especially those moving & smiling parts.

I haven't sewn a stitch since probably April, so I've decided to participate in Judy's UFO challenge to get several projects to the finished flimsy stage:

1- Rangeley Stars
2- Triple 4-patch swap
3- Blue/white Duck & Ducklings
4- Black S&W
5- 4-patch on design wall (Yes, I cheated and made this #5 so I could get it off the wall!)
6- Swap from California Cruisin' book
7- Cheap Trick
8- Green County Lines
9- Patriotic Hidden Star
10- Baskets BOM
11- Green Caffrey mystery
12- Leaf Season

I also joined in on SewCalGal's free motion quilting challenge. A lot of comfort quilts are going to be my practice pieces this year, so hopefully next year I can quilt this year's finished UFOs.

And last but not least, I've joined Denise's 12 in 2012 sock knitting challenge. I think I've only finished one pair of socks this year!Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05206971105008663908noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7045803000351228084.post-10083200579807023392011-06-07T20:12:00.000-04:002011-06-07T20:12:48.496-04:00NQRThis is pretty cute... a dad waving to his teenage son on the bus each school day through the year.
Work has been sucking the life out of me for the past several weeks, which leaves me mentally and emotionally depleted. My work BFF was "let go," supposedly for lack of funds, and four days later we got a bombshell dropped on us that a new layer of management had been added -- another whole layer of BS to each and every day. More people will be leaving, I suspect, and even when you know you excel at your job, it's difficult not to worry. And even though I know quiltmaking calms me and gives me that "Calgon, take me away!" feeling, sometimes it takes more energy than I have just to pick up where I left off.

I had a personal goal to have this baby finished-to-flimsy by April 16th, but that didn't happen. Yesterday I was putting blocks on the wall to get a visual and realized something was wrong. There should have been only two chains, but I was ending up with three?

These were the alternate blocks I sewed.

Sewed wrong, that is. There was no place to put them in a 3-chain design. Yes, there are some in the picture, but they don't go.
The picture, taken this morning, shows what I accomplished through Sunday evening, and I'm very happy with that progress in three weeks. I don't think I'll ever go back to one sock at a time.

The grey pair only needs cast off, but I need to unearth the book to see how to do that. About 10 rounds plus the cuff is needed on the other pair. I have something going on every night this week, so none of that will happen before the weekend. Then I need to move on to some Christmas gifts so I won't feel so guilty about what I spent during a cyber-Monday sale.Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05206971105008663908noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7045803000351228084.post-85825097702139001842010-11-20T18:08:00.000-05:002010-11-20T18:08:57.716-05:00Nothing but knittin' this weekI've managed to do quite a bit of knitting this week. I'm past the heel and ready for the leg on the second dark sock, and I found two skeins of Regia Cotton in the nether regions of my stash to restart the two-at-once last Sunday. Toe-up this time, just because it's what I'm used to.

I'm not entirely fond of this cotton yarn (very splitty!), but I'm loving the process. I want to work on quilts tomorrow, so I'm hoping to make it through the heels on the grey tonight, leaving nothing but legs to work on during the coming week.

Must get a pedicure!Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05206971105008663908noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7045803000351228084.post-24301221973080943972010-11-11T08:21:00.000-05:002010-11-11T08:21:49.900-05:00ProgressLast week felt frigid here for early November, and I managed to come down with a nasty upper respiratory and sinus infection that doesn't want to go away. This week is better with temps in the high 60s, but it's been a rough week with the time change.

I've made a little progress on the one sock thanks to some mindless ribbing on the leg while watching TV. A little bit to go on the cuff and I'm ready to start the next. It cracks me up how distorted these can look when the ribbing isn't expanded. Must ask Santa for some sock blockers.

The two-at-once didn't fare as well. I love the process, but they were too tight when I tried one on Grant last week. Hopefully this weekend I'll have a couple of hours to invest in starting again. It's not nearly the mindless process (yet) as one at a time.

The blue Sockotta cotton/wool socks were started before the 2010 Olympics but, sadly, I dropped a stitch and didn't notice it until the sock was bound off and they got pushed aside for a more patient day. I fixed and finished it last weekend so I could start the ones in the center with my currently preferred toe-up, one-at-a-time. I needed something to fall back on if I got too frustrated with the new method. Sunday I buckled down and forced myself to learn two socks-at-once in daylight hours. Early in the summer I bought the books recommended by Mary and read them a lot, but hadn't tried the method.

It really defeats the purpose of knitting two at once to make them different colors, I guess you're thinking? I didn't have two identical skeins of any yarn, so I decided to use different colors of the same yarn. As it turns out, it's hell on the eyes to knit black /dark yarn, so teaming it with the green works better for tracking where I am. Another reason for using two colors was to track Sock 1 and Sock 2... I thought. It took a bit to realize Sock 1 changes with each portion of the round. Before that realization, there were quite a few gymnastic effects and frustrating moments when trying to knit the black 'Sock 1' first each time.

I'll have to work on these during lunch hours if I hope to make any significant progress during the month. My nights are mostly filled with what little quiltmaking happens in my life right now.

Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05206971105008663908noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7045803000351228084.post-35581234505499595002010-11-01T09:35:00.000-04:002010-11-01T09:35:53.683-04:00Back again!Right after my last post and all my virus issues, the display went out on my 6 y/o laptop and I was without a computer for about 5 weeks while looking for the perfect economic solution (free). The first week was really rough (think DTs!), but I eventually came around and managed to live a life with only my work computer and lunchtime to tide me over. The good thing is I managed to get a lot of stuff done in my downtime.

Here are a couple of quilts I finished and sent off to Gloria in Utah to quilt and donate for her project. I'll have better pictures from her once they are quilted. A couple of toddler quilts are on their way as well.
